The british thriller

when it comes to British thrillers are elements they seem to be very different. for one thing when it comes to horror thrillers there would be alot of gore and death. also the locations are usually dirty and dingy for example dark alleys or old bridges.

The thrillers harry brown and dead mans shoes both fit into these elements. dead mans shoes(psychological/action thriller):
  • masked killer
  • dirty dingy flats
  • damp weather
  • endless fields
  • gore and blood innovative murder
  • twists in the story
harry brown (crime thriller)
  • gangs and violence
  • guns
  • dark alleyways and bridges
  • old estates
  • death and knifes
  • vulnerable elderly victims
  • misread teenagers/ dangerous aggressive teens
  • canals (filthy)
To give my thriller British identity i will use certain significant landmarks like estates or tube stations. also the use of alleyways would be possible. a scene form harry brown which inspires my location ideas is the scene shot in the alleyway where harry brown kills the teenagers. this was inspiring because you could not see round the dark corners  and neither could the audience creating suspense and fear which is something that i want my audience to feel.

classic thriller

For classic thrillers I'm referring to Alfred Hitchcock.
he framed his shots to manipulate the feelings of his audience to emphasise the anxiety and fear in his viewers.he seemed to stick to the stereotype characters such a s blond woman who for some stereotypical reason more vulnerable than others. he would add twists in to his movies to keep the audience on the edge and stuck to mostly violence, murder, crime and mystery thrillers that his audience could familiarise themselves with.

How will ill try to create this journey for the audience in my thriller opening? :

I think that because my thriller is only an opening i cannot give too much away to the audience so i will leave my characters nameless creating anxiety. also i will not have no More than two characters as that will enhance the focus of the viewers as too many characters for an opening will complicate there minds.i will try to use the right setting to create suspense and fear. for instance empty parking lots, quiet areas and strange looking buildings. Also to demonstrate the point of view of my characters i would use over the shoulder shots and point of view shots.

what is a thriller ?

what is a thriller? well, they say that the term thriller is used very vaguely when it comes to film. Its contents can range from ghosts to mystery and horror as well as crime and action.there are many sub genres of the thriller. they are:
  • crime thriller
  • action thriller
  • sci-fi thriller
  • supernatural thriller
  • zombie thriller
  • conspiracy thriller
  • disaster thriller
  • erotic thriller
  • legal thriller
  • medical thriller
  • mystery thriller
  • political thriller
  • phycological thriller
  • religious thriller
The elements of thrillers

  •  something that contains alot of suspense
  • a mystery that is being solved
  • alot of suspicious crime
  • the wondering of whats next
Martin Rubin claims that the genre is to broad and that we cannot compare the genre of thriller with those of western or science fiction.he said that as the genre has to combine with others ( crime thriller) that there will never be such a thing as a ''pure , freestanding thriller.''

some examples of thrillers would be:
  •  the secret window
  • the lost boys
  • the lovely bones
the type of characters one would expect to find in thrillers would be :

  • a villain
  • a victim
  • a hero
  • a not so smart teen (preferably a girl, blond)
  • a masked character
  • a character of who, you do not know there identity
As you can see there is question to whether the thriller genre can be defined as just a thriller as the elements that it contains are too vague.
